Sports in Australia are very popular. In many ways Australia seems to be the sports and outdoor activity capital of the world. There’s a wide range of climates on the continent, so a wide range of sports activities is available throughout the year.

Surfing is the obvious sport associated with Australia, and if you are brave enough, you can enjoy this sport all year around. Swimming is very popular, too. Australians and tourists enjoy swimming both in swimming pools, and, of course, at a large number of Australia's beaches. Other popular sports include walking, jogging, cycling and much more. It may sound surprising but Australia also offers skiing, cross-country skiing and snowboarding. The snow in Australia is real and ski resorts are popular.

Getting back to surfing, it’s important to remember that anyone who wants to get into it should follow the safety rules. Surfing is a high risk sport, and sharks are not actually the main danger. Sharks are a common feature of Australian waters but fatal attacks are rare.  Rips put inexperienced surfers at much greater risk. They are the cause of most tragedies at beaches.

A rip, or a rip current, is a strong current running out to sea. It forms not far from the shore. It’s difficult to notice when a rip comes. It drags everything from the beach to sea. Rips are very dangerous as they can carry a weak or tired swimmer out into deep water.

To avoid or survive rip currents, surfers and swimmers should use only lifeguide protected beaches. They should never swim or surf alone. They should never enter the surf in places where swimming is prohibited. Sport is a great way to escape the stress of modern day living, but it can cause trouble if people are careless.

A rip is a dangerous fish that lives in Australians waters. T, F, Not stated

The most surfers’ deaths and injuries are caused by sharks.

Winter sports are popular in Australia too.

All the beaches in Australia have protection against sharks

The koala is a small bear-like animal that looks like a soft toy. The animal is cute and non-aggressive, but it’s difficult to see a koala in the Zoo and no one ever keeps them as pets. Why is it so?

The main reason why people shouldn’t try to take koalas out from their natural home is their diet. It’s a strict diet of eucalyptus leaves as koalas practically never eat anything else. In Australia there are over 600 types of eucalyptus, but koalas eat only 40–50 varieties with only about 10 being preferred. And even if you find the koala’s most favourite tree and plant it in your backyard, you won’t be able to supply your koala-pet with food anyway. The thing is that koalas eat only fresh young leaves, and the tree has few of them. So, to keep a koala happy and healthy, you would have to plant about 100 eucalyptus trees!

It’s difficult to explain why koalas love eucalyptus leaves so much. The leaves are tough and feel like rubber. They have very few calories and they are poisonous to most animals. Koalas, however, cope with such a diet easily. Nature has equipped them with specialised adaptations. Each koala eats approximately 200 to 500 grams of leaves per day. They are very slow eaters and they manage to get the maximum amount of energy from such a small amount of food. They also sleep for up to 18 hours per day in order to conserve energy.

Koalas spend all their lives on eucalyptus trees and they don’t have any need to leave them. Normally the animals don’t drink water as they receive it from the leaves. For this reason the koala got its name from an ancient Aboriginal word meaning "no drink".

Koalas live in societies, just like humans, so they need to be able to come into contact with other koalas. They live in suitable eucalyptus forests which are large enough to support a healthy koala population and to allow for expansion by maturing young koalas. In spite of their peaceful and sleepy look, koalas are highly territorial animals and don’t allow strangers to approach their “home trees” and “food trees”.

Most animals enjoy eating fresh Eucalyptus leaves. True, False, Not stated

Koalas need a lot of fresh water to stay healthy.

The leader of koalas’ group is always the oldest koala.

To keep koalas as pets is very difficult.

Прочитайте тексты и установите соответствие между текстами А–E и заголовками 1–6. Запишите свои ответы в таблицу. Используйте каждую цифру только один раз. В задании есть один лишний заголовок.

1. Economy and industries

2. Food and drinks

3. Main cities

4. Leisure time

5. Population

6. Pages of history

A. Australia once had close ties with Great Britain. Until fifty years ago, almost all Australians were of British or Irish origin. But after World War II more than two million people arrived from Europe. New Australians, as they were known, were from Greece, Germany and Italy. Mass migration has changed Australia into a multicultural society. Today, people of Anglo-Irish origin are a minority. Many recent immigrants are from South East Asia, the Philippines and China .

B. Australia's prosperity has been founded on its natural resources. It produces almost every mineral from gold to uranium. Traditionally, Australia was a farming country and its wealth was founded on wool, cattle and wheat. It is still a major exporter of food, making it the breadbasket of Asia. Agriculture and mining, however, employ comparatively few people. Tourism is now Australia's largest industry, employing 6% of the population. More than three million visitors come to the country each year.

C. In spite of the importance of the bush to Australian folklore, 90% of Australians live in cities. Almost everyone lives within a few kilometres of the sea and of the ocean. The beaches are used in same way as parks: families have picnics, people of all ages jog, play volleyball, swim or just walk. There is great interest in water sports like water skiing, surfing, swimming and sailing. Every city has tennis courts, allowing half a million people play competitively.

D. The Dutch were the first Europeans to see Australia, in the early seventeenth century, but they found no opportunities to settle or trade. English explorer James Cook landed near Sydney 160 years later and claimed it for Britain. But still no one could think what to do with it. The American Revolution provided a solution. America had been used Australia as a dumping ground for criminals, mostly the unfortunate poor from cities created during the industrial revolution.

E. Australians used to live on a diet of lamb and potatoes. But with such a variety of climates and with so many ethic groups, the Australian diet has changed dramatically. Cities like Melbourne and Sydney are proud of their huge range of ethnic restaurants and multicultural cuisine, ranging from Italian to Tibetan. The barbecue is a national institution. It is an informal event for people and there is nothing more refreshing than a swim before eating fruit, fresh salads, and steaks.
