Who is a true friend in today’s highly technological society?

1. Is it provocative?

Yes, it is. This question is provocative because students start to rethink and to go beyond superficialities to deep thought and lively discussion. It provokes sustained inquiry and new understanding as well as more questions.The definition of a “true friend” has changed in today’s technologically connected world.

2. Is it open-ended?

Yes, it is. This question is open-ended; it typically will not have a single and correct answer. Answers should require evidence and support. There are many definitions of what it means to be a “true friend”.

3. Is it challenging?

Yes, it is. This question is challenging because it sparks discussion and debate. The Internet, Facebook, texting, and all the advances we’ve had in technology have changed our friendship and qualities of a “true friend”.

4. Does it go to the heart of a discipline or topic?

Yes, it does. This question will help students to learn vocabulary and develop speaking skills on the topic "Friendship". Leaving feedback, writing essays, creating discussions are appropriate both in individual and group work.

5. Does it arise from real world dilemmas that students find interesting?

Yes, it does. This question is closely-connected with society because having a good and true friend is one of the most important things in life. Humans are social beings, and no person can ever feel completely satisfied being alone. It is extremely necessary for everyone to have at least one friend in life you can share experiences with. This question are raised in our society nowadays and discussed in most schools, especially in high school.
