We use activities and games in the foreign language classroom because they enhance language learning in a way that students don’t really feel that they are really studying. It is learning through fun! So, let’s use some of the games that inform us who knows English better.

So, let’s start. The first task is to pronounce some tongue-twisters.

  1. A big black bug bit a big black bear,

Made the big black bear bleed blood.

(Большой черный жук укусил большого черного медведя

Заставил большого черного медведя истекать кровью).

I sleet the sheet, the sheet I slit, and on the slitted sheet I slit.

(Я разрезал простыню, простыню я разрезал на длинные куски,

И на разрезанной простыне я сижу).

If two witches were watching two watches

Which witch would watch which watch?

(Если бы две ведьмы смотрели на двое часов,

То которая из ведьма смотрела бы на какие часы?)

How many cookies could I a good cook cook

If a good cook could cook cookies?

(Сколько печенья мог бы испечь хороший повар,

Если бы хороший повар умел печь печенье?)

  1. This is a simple vocabulary game.

Students have to fill each column with a vocabulary that begins with the letter and pertains to the category.

“flat” “family”

A A

B B

C C

  1. The “coffeepot” game

One student is sent out the class and the remaining students choose a simple verb (“walk”, “eat”, “dance”). The student that is outside then returns and has to find out which is the “mystery” verb by asking yes-no questions to the other students. The word “coffeepot” is provided to substitute the verb. The student then asks: “Do you coffeepot every day?” “Do you coffeepot with your legs?” until he finds out which the mystery verb is.

  1. All the students are standing. The teacher starts the games by saying a word, such as “Hotel”. Students continue this topic. For ex: “Bed”, “Room”, “Service”, “Food”, “Restaurant”, “Chinese”. Any association is ok. If the student can’t answer he must sit down. The last student who is standing is the winner.

So, let’s have a rest. Now, we will tell you some short funny stories.

Peter: I don’t understand why we study English.

Father: It is because half of the world speaks English.

Peter: Well, isn’t that enough?

Poet: Have you got my books of poems?

Lady: Oh, yes, I have. It is lovely! I wonder where it is…

Lady’s little son: It is under the leg of the table, Mummy.

Bessie is a little girl. She is only five. She does not go to school and, of course, she does not know how to read and write. But her sister Mary is a schoolgirl. She is ten. One day Mary sees her little sister at the table with a pen in her hand and some paper in front of her. “What are you doing Bessie?” she says. Bessie answers: “I am writing a letter to my friend Kitty”. “But you don’t know how to write”, says her sister. “Well”, says Bessie, “it doesn’t matter, because Kitty does not know how to read”.

Now, I want to tell you about SPOONERISMS. The word “spoonerism” comes from William Archibald Spooner who was famous for making verbal slips. Spoonerisms are words are phrases in which letters or syllables get swapped. This happens accidentally in slips of the tongue. Having read the spoonerisms given below, train your imagination and make up your own spoonerisms:

A lack of pies (A pack of lies). Недостаток пирогов (сплошная ложь)

Wave the sails (Save the whales). Поднимите паруса (спасите китов)

Cat flap (Flat cap). Кошачье длинное ухо (плоский колпачок)

So, let’s continue…

  1. Divide into two groups. Then I give you a statement beginning with “Do you believe that?”. The winner is the team that takes more right answers. You should your opinion using the words from the list below.

The list:
