Text 21. TOM'S EYES ARE BIG.

Tom Barton is an English schoolboy. He goes to school in Liverpool. He does well at school. English children also get marks in their school subjects.

They call them grades. You get a five and a schoolboy in England gets a fifty-five or sixty. You get a seven and he gets a seventy -five or eighty. You get a ten and he gets a ninety-six or a hundred. At the end of the school year the form teacher sends the pupil’s school report to his parents.

Tom is very happy today. His school report is very good. His parents are proud of their son.

The next day Tom sees something on his table. It is a letter. There is no stamp on the letter. Tom is surprised. His parents are smiling. In the letter there is a card:

Look on your father’s desk behind the lamp.

There is nothing else in the letter. On his father’s desk behind the lamp there is another card:

Look in your bedroom under your bed.

He doesn’t understand anything. In the bedroom under his bed he sees another card:

Look in the kitchen near the cupboard.

Tom is very excited. His father is laughing. “Hurry up, Tom! I haven’t any time. I must go to work.” In the kitchen on the table near the cupboard there is another card:

Look in the garden in front of the garage.

It is the last card. There is something wonderful in front of the garage in the garden. It is not a card. Can you guess what it is? It is a bicycle - a new bicycle.

Tom’s eyes are big. “It’s great. It’s really something, I like it very much! Thank you, Dad! Thank you, Mummy!”
