Look at the picture and answer my questions!

The topic of today’s lesson is “Against all odds”. By the end of the lesson you are to

-read the text;

-fill in the gaps with the given sentences;

-discuss the character’s decision.( Slide 2)

They are trying to reach the top of the mountain. It’s a very exciting but dangerous activity.

Yes, I’d like to, because I like challenge and adventure./ No, I wouldn’t. I prefer indoor activities such as playing chess.

Look at the pictures! (Slides 3-6) What feelings do you have when you see them? Would you like to visit these places? Discuss with your partner.

Look at the phrases. They are taken from the text. ex.2 p.64

What do you think the text is about?

P1: The views are breathtaking. One can feel relaxed here far from the noise of the big cities.

P2: And one can enjoy the beauty of lakes and mountains.

In my opinion, it’s about British mountaineers who got into trouble and one of them had to decide what to do in this situation.

Imagine that you’re a screenwriter. What would you tell the producer to persuade him to make a film based on these events.

The story takes place in the Peruvian Andes in the summer of 1985. Two young mountaineers decided to conquer the Siula Grande

Joe Simpson is a character of the story who slipped and broke his leg during their descent .

Another character of the story is Simon Yates who faced with an agonizing decision to send his friend to certain death or save him.

A problem occurs when Simon tried to lower his friend down the mountain using a rope and got no sounds back from Joe .

After that, Simon decided to cut the rope because his strength grew weaker.

Then he continued down the mountain alone.

And Joe was badly injured but not killed .

The problem is solved when Joe managed to crawl down the mountain to safety .

Listen and read the text again. Discuss the characters of the story. Do you think Simon made the right decision? What do you think of Joe? What would you do if you were in their shoes?

P1: I think Simon made the right decision. I would

have done the same. It is better for one man to

die than two. There was no guarantee that

Simon would have been able to save his friend’s life, anyway. And what’s your opinion?

P2: And I can’t but admire Joe. He is a real fighter who isn’t used to giving up.

P1: I agree he is a brave strong man.

3.Завершающий этап.

Imagine you’re Joe. Your task is to write a paragraph describing what happened and how you felt during your journey down the mountain to safety. (Slide 13)
