The history of the Olympic games.

• Beginning in 776 BC, the Olympic Games were held in the Valley of Olympia in Greece.
• They were dedicated to the Olympic Gods and took place every four years.

• Sportsmen came to the Valley of Olympia from every corner of the Greek world.
• They competed in running, wrestling, the pentathlon (running, wrestling, jumping, throwing the discus, throwing the javelin)
• In time boxing, a chariot race and other events were included.
• The victors were awarded with wreaths from the olive tree.

• Emperor Theodosius abolished the Olympic Games in AD 394.
• The first Modern Olympic Games took place in Greece in 1896.
• Almost 300 athletes from 13 countries participated in 9 different sports.
• The five Olympic rings were designed by Baron de Coubertin in 1913-14.

• The Olympic Flame was lit during the ancient Olympic Games.
• It has been lit every Olympiad since the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Amsterdam.

• The Olympic motto is “Citius, Altius, Fortius!” – “Faster, higher, stronger!”
• The Olympic creed is “The most important thing in the Olympic games in not to win but to take part.

• The mascot first appeared at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games. It was Waldi, the dachshund.
• The mascot shows the geographical features, history and culture of the host city.
• The mascots of the Sochi Olympic Games were a hare, a polar bear and a snow leopard.

• The opening ceremony has been organized since 1928.
• All delegations parade in alphabetical order. But Greece is always the first and the last delegation is the host country.

• Sportsmen compete in 28 summer sports and 7 winter sports.

• 2014 Winter Olympics were held in Sochi.
• Their creed was “Hot. Cool. Yours”.
• The mascots of the Sochi Olympic Games were a hare, a polar bear and a snow leopard.
• 15 winter sports were played in the 2014 Winter Olympics program.
• 88 countries participated in the Games.
• Sochi is the warmest city to host a Winter Olympic Games.
• The Russian team was the winner according to the number of medals.
