Задание 40 (Opinion Essay)

Comment on the following statement:

Many young people think that the art of writing letters should not be revived.

What is your opinion?

Write  200 — 250 words.

Use the following plan:

• Make the introduction (state the problem)
• Express your personal opinion and give 2 – 3 reasons for your opinion
• Express the opposing opinion and give 1 – 2 reasons for this opposing opinion
• Explain why you don’t agree with the opposing opinion
• Make a conclusion restating your position

Вступительная часть (the introduction)

Начните писать свое сочинение, перефразировав предложенный текст-стимул.

Например :

Nowadays teenagers hold the opinion that writing letters is not a convenient way of exchanging information. However, a lot of adults consider that the epistolary style is worth keeping. So, who is right? 

.

Основная часть сочинения , как правило, состоит из трех абзацев:

— express your personal opinion ( ваша точка зрения )

— express the opposing opinion ( точка зрения воображаемого оппонента )

— explain why you don’t agree with the opposing opinion ( объясните , почему вы не согласны с точкой зрения оппонента )

Во вступлении вы сформулировали  две противоположных  точки зрения (обратите внимание, что здесь мы  не выражаем  своего личного мнения по проблеме!) Выберите тот тезис, который выражает  вашу точку зрения , и приступайте к подбору аргументов и доводов в свою пользу.

Правила подбора аргументов:

• Нужно всегда учитывать логическую связь между элементами: тезисом-аргументом-доводом
• Нужно всегда выделять ключевые слова при анализе утверждений: ключевые слова в тезисе помогут подобрать аргументы, а ключевые слова в аргументе помогут правильно сформулировать довод.
• Выделив ключевые слова в аргументе, составьте вопрос, проясняющий их содержание. Ответами на этот вопрос будут являться доводы.
• При выборе аргументов  «ЗА» , не ссылайтесь на мнение оппонента (вы отстаиваете  СВОЮ  позицию).

ТЕЗИС     →    ПОТОМУ ЧТО          →            АРГУМЕНТ

АРГУМЕНТ →        ПОЭТОМУ              →               ТЕЗИС

Тезис   автора :   

I strongly believe that to write letters, using a pen and an

envelope in the age of modern technologies seems to be ridiculous.

Аргументы:

• Today young people tend to use modern devices for exchanging information.
• Computers give people an easy access to communication.
• People who continue writing letters are thought to be old-fashioned.

Схема подбора доводов:

АРГУМЕНТ              →               ПОТОМУ ЧТО               →               ДОВОД

ДОВОД                   →               ПОЭТОМУ                     →               АРГУМЕНТ

Доводы :

• Today young people tend to use modern devices such as smartphones for exchanging information  because typing and texting are better than letter writing.
• Computers give people an easy and fast access to communication  because you need just a few seconds to send your e-mail worldwide.
• People who continue writing letters are thought to be old-fashioned  because they don’t know how to operate the computer or communicate with the help of SMS language.

Правила подбора контраргументов:

1. Нужно частично признать, что в аргументах оппонента есть здравый смысл 2. Выделить в доводах оппонента ключевые слова и на их основе нужно сформулировать противоположные по смыслу утверждения 3. Количество контрдоводов должно равняться количеству аргументов оппонента 4. Нужно проверить, что контраргумент отвечает на вопрос, почему аргумент оппонента является неубедительным

Контраргументы:

• Letter writing  develops your speech and writing skills   (literacy).
• Letter writing is  a kind of tradition  which is difficult to quit.
• Letter writing helps to  raise your language competence .

Вывод (Make   a   conclusion)

• В конце сочинения проверьте, достаточно ли отражена убедительность вашего тезиса в общем выводе (5й абзац). То есть, вам нужно еще раз повторить мысль, которая представляет ваше мнение по данному вопросу.

Sample answer

Nowadays teenagers hold the opinion that writing letters is not a convenient way of exchanging information. However, a lot of adults consider that the epistolary style is worth keeping. So, who is right? (33)

I strongly believe  that to write letters, using a pen and an envelope in the age of modern technologies seems to be ridiculous.  Firstly , today young people tend to use recent devices such as smartphones for exchanging information. For example, typing and texting are better than letter writing because you can interact with your friends no matter where you are.   Secondly , computers give people an easy and fast access to communication, so you need just a few seconds to send your e-mail worldwide. 

besides,  people who continue writing letters are thought to be old-fashioned. (127)

At the same time, some   people think  that letter writing helps to raise your language competence because in order to avoid mistakes you should remember all grammar rules.  Moreover,  for the older generation it is a kind of tradition which is difficult to quit. (171)

As for me, I cannot completely agree  with the above mentioned opinion, because if you do not know how to write this or that word, you can consult online dictionaries.  What is more , it is not very convenient to use a snail mail as it can take you far more time to get a letter. (226)

To sum it up, I reckon  that the revival of letter writing is a lap into the past. So, it is much better to keep up with the times. (255)
