The national Bulgarian festival in the Crimea.

The Crimean Peninsula is a unique corner of the earth, where a variety of ethnic communities have been good neighbors for many years. Each nationality has its own distinctive features, customs, traditions and, of course, its own holidays.

Trifon Zarezan

Trifon Zarezan is a Bulgarian national custom observed on the1st or 14th of February in honor of Saint Tryphon. It is celebrated as a professional holiday by vine growers, falconers1, gardeners and innkeepers. The day historically marks the beginning of grape pruning2. It usually includes a variety of rituals performed by both men and women alike.

On the day of Saint Tryphon, who is revered3 by Bulgarians as the patron saint of the workers of the "grape business", the rite of the first pruning of the vine is held (in Bulgarian, "pruning" is "zarzvan", therefore Tryphon is called Zarezan).

According to tradition, on this day a prayer service is held in honor of Saint Tryphon, the ritual of pruning the vine is performed. And also the King of winegrowers is chosen, who treats everyone present with various dishes. The Bulgarian holiday is not

complete without the folk dance horo (round dance).

In the Crimea, within the framework of the holiday, a competition for the national dish-Sarmi, as well as a folklore concert is held.
