Festivals in Russia

Christmas

• Christmas in Russia is celebrated a little differently than in other countries! Instead of December 25th, Russians celebrate Christmas on January 7th. That’s because they use a different calendar.
• Before Christmas, many people go to church and try to be good. On Christmas Eve, families have a special dinner with lots of yummy food, but no meat!

• Instead of Santa Claus, children in Russia get presents from Ded Moroz (Grandfather Frost) and his granddaughter, Snegurochka (Snow Maiden). They bring gifts and leave them under the Christmas tree.
• On Christmas Day, families go to church and spend time together, sharing delicious food and singing special songs. It’s a time for family, fun, and being happy!

• Maslenitsa
• There are a lot of good customs and traditions in Russia. People like to celebrate them and follow some good traditions. One of the most popular traditions is Maslenitsa. It always comes at the end of winter, in February. It lasts over a week. As a rule the weather of this time is cold and frosty.

• It's a week of different national food. People cook such tasty things as pancakes and eat them with caviar butter or cream. People start celebrating it in the morning. One of the most popular customs is to swim in the ice hole. Some people like to do it.

• Another good tradition is to burn a scarescrow in the bonfire. Boys and girls go around the bonfire. They sing songs that the winter will go away and the spring will come. After that they jump above the fire. It is very exсiting.

Easter

• Easter is the most important festival in the church year, more important than Christmas. People begin to get ready for Easter forty days before Easter Sunday . These forty days are called Lent , and they begin on Ash Wednesday. The day before Ash Wednesday is Pancake Day.

• Easter is usually celebrated in April or May.
• On the day of Easter morning people go to church and take part in the service.
• After that people visit their grandmas and grandpas. When they arrive, they say: "Christ is Risen, and they respond to them" Truly resurrected“.

• During the celebration of Easter, people have to remember about life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Many people go to church on Easter Day: there are lots of flowers and people sing special Easter songs.

• The day before Easter Russians bake cakes and color eggs, which symbolize the body of Christ. It is necessary to start the Easter dinner with a painted egg and a piece of a Easter cake .
