What is Reported Speech?

• When you ‘report’ what someone else has said* to you
• *reported speech verbs: said, explained, told, suggested, recommended, asked, etc.
• Direct/normal sentence: Mike:‘I like your hat!’
• Indirect/reported speech: Mike said that he liked your hat.

How to turn direct sentences into indirect sentences

‘ I will always love you!’ said Whitney.

Whitney said that she would always love you.

• Start with the subject + reported speech verb + that
• Change the subject according to the speaker: I  she
• Put the verb in the correct past tense: will love  would love

Questions

Meg: ‘Do you know how to get to the station?’

Meg asked if I knew how to get to the station.

• Start with the subject + asked + if/whether
• Change the subject according to the speaker: you  I
• Put the verb in the correct past tense: do ... know  knew

Questions with question words

• Questionwords: who, what, where, when, why, which, how

Trish: ‘Paul, where do you live?’

Trish asked Paul where he lived.

‘ What’s for dinner tonight?’ asked Jaime.

Jaime asked what was for dinner tonight.

Imperatives

Imperative Don’t talk! Listen! Do your work! Sit down!

John: ‘Bruto, sit down!’

John told Bruto to sit down .

How?: told + person + to + infinitive

Requests

Ann: ‘Could you close the window, please?’ Ann asked me to close the window.

How?: asked + person + to + infinitive
