Adolf Hitler (1889-1945)

Adolf Hitler was born in Austria in 1889. As a child, he got on very well with his mother but he didn’t get on well with his father as he was very harsh. Hitler didn’t have a happy childhood. Both his parents died very young as well as many of his brothers and sisters. He didn’t do well at school and soon at the age of sixteen he left it and went to Vienna where he hoped to enter the Academy and become a painter. He didn’t manage to enter the Academy and soon he became very poor and stayed in homeless shelters. At that time, he began to hate Jews who were doing well in his country.

In 1913, he went to Munich, Germany. When World War I began, Hitler joined the German army. At that time, Hitler became a strong German patriot and came to love war. After the war, Hitler entered politics. Many Germans were upset that they had lost the war. They were also not happy with the Treaty of Versailles, which blamed the war on Germany and took land from Germany.

Soon Hitler discovered that he was perfect at giving speeches. His speeches were powerful and people believed what he said. Hitler joined the Nazi party and soon became its leader. In 1933, he was elected Chancellor of Germany.

Hitler thought that Germany needed more land to be more powerful. He first annexed Austria as part of Germany and then took over part of Czechoslovakia. Then he invaded Poland and World War II began. Hitler united with Japan and Italy. Hitler's army began to take over much of Europe. They attacked quickly in what was called Blitzkrieg or "lightning war". Soon Germany had captured much of Europe including France, Denmark, and Belgium. However, the Allied Powers of Britain, France, the Soviet Union, and the United States defeated Germany. On April 30, 1945 Hitler committed suicide.

During World War II millions of Jews were tortured and killed.
