Topic: School life

Subtopic: School life is amazing.

Aims: to learn and use phrases to describe life at school, to develop students` topic vocabulary; to encourage students to talk about their own lives; to give practice in reading for gist and specific information; to introduce the concept of websites; to facilitate students` understanding of the functions and usage of the modals can, could, must, have to, should; to give practice in listening for gist and specific information.

Materials and equipment: a CD, a tape recorder

Textbook: Terry Jacovides, Anne Nebel - Laser A1, Macmillan

The procedure of the lesson

  1. Introduction

1. Greetings

-Good morning, dear children

-Good morning, dear guests

2. Warm up

-What can you see on the board? Read the proverbs (It`s never too late to learn/ Live and learn)

-Do we have the Russian equivalent for that?

3. Introduction to the topic

-As far as you can understand the topic of our lesson today is…

-What are we going to discuss here?

II. The main part

  1. Vocabulary work

-You see school deals with a lot of things or you deal with a lot of things at school. What are your associations with this word?

-To continue our vocabulary work let`s do Ex.1p.50 (PB)

-Reflexion ( I look at the same exercise)

2. Speaking

-What is school?

-Why do people study? (You go to school to become cleverer. Are you intelligent enough to say what holiday it is on April, 12th)

-What makes your parents choose a place for you to study? What are their arguments in favour of this or that school?

-Reflexion (What have we discussed?)

3. Reading

-Pre-reading task

We are going to work with the text (p50-51 PB). Have a look and say what kind of reading it is and where you can see it.

Website advert

You have to understand the difference between these words. I am going to read the sentences and your task is to say if it is website or advert (TB p49)

-Read the name of the text and guess what it is going to be about?

-What can be a reason to change a school?

-Reading

-Post-reading task (KET-type task Ex. 1 p50-51)

-What are the reasons to start a new school according to the article?

-Which of them seem to be reasonable for you?

-What does the article suggest you? (Maybe to look at Ex.2 p51)

-What special verbs do we use to express suggestions, advice?

-Find them in the text.

-Read the rule (p 52 PB) ability, permission, obligation, advice
