Text 4. WORK AND PLAY

Bob is not happy. He has a lot of work and very little time for his hobby. His hobby is football. He knows a lot of things about football. He knows the names of the best football players and he watches all football matches on TV.

He came from school today, threw his books onto a chair and sat down with a sigh.

“What’s the matter, Bob?” asked his mother.

“Too much homework, too many lessons, too much school. I’m fed up.”

“What has happened?” asked the mother.

“Nothing. I want to join the football club. If I practice, I’ll become a member of the school football club. But how can I practice if I have so much homework?”

Bob is thirteen years old. His sister Rose is fifteen, and she thinks that Bob is not serious. Rose works hard at school because she wants to be a doctor. She always says, “You’ll never get a good job if you don’t have a good education.”

“I want to play football in the club. But if I do all my homework, I’ll have no time for my hobby.”

“It’s only half past four,” said his mother. “Sit down and do your homework in an hour. Then go and play football. If you come home before seven, you’ll have enough time to finish your homework. What do you think?”

So Bob sat down at his table and took his books out of his bag. He opened his history book and began to read.

At half past five his mother came into his room. Bob was there with his history book in his hands.

“What about football?” she asked. “Go out and play for an hour.”

“Oh, I’ve only done my history lesson. I have read a story about Marco Polo and his trip round the world. It’s so interesting that I couldn’t stop. I think history is my favourite pastime. I want to buy some books on old history.”

Bob went to play football. When he came back, he did his homework and took his history book again. What do you think Bob’s new hobby will be now?
