The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the united States of America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are English-speaking countries. Each country has its own history, customs, traditions, its own national holidays. But they all share a common language. But I would like to tell you about the UK.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is situated on the British Isles. The British Isles consist of two large islands, Great Britain and Ireland, and about five thousand small islands. Their total area is over 244.000 square kilometers.

The United Kingdom is made up of four countries: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Their capitals are London, Cardiff, Edinburgh, and Belfast. The capital of the UK is London.

The British Isles are separated from the European continent by the North Sea and the English Channel. The western coast of Great Britain is washed by the Atlantic Ocean and the Irish Sea.

The north of Scotland is mountainous and is called the Highlands, while the south is called the Lowlands. The north and west of England are mountainous, but mountains are not high. Ben Nevis in Scotland is the highest mountain (1.343 m).

There are a lot of rivers in Great Britain, but they are not very long. The Severn is the longest river. The Thames is the deepest river.

The mountains, the Atlantic Ocean, and the warm waters of Gulf Stream influence on the climate of the British Isles. It is mild the whole year round.

The population The UK is over 57 million people. The national anthem is "God Save the Queen." The national currency is pound. The flag of the UK is known as the Union Jack. It has its history. It all began in 1603 when Scotland was joined to England and Wales. The flag is made up of 3 crosses.

The UK is a constitutional monarchy. In law, the Head of the State is Queen Elisabeth II. In practice, Queen reigns, but does not rule. The country is ruled by the parliament. The head of the parliament is the Prime Minister Boris Johnson. The British Parliament consists of two chambers: the House of Lords and the House of Commons.

Every year on the fifth of November Bonfire Night is celebrated all over the UK. Queen Elizabeth I made some laws against the Roman Catholics. King James I agreed with her. Guy Fawkes thought that it was unfair and plotted to kill King James and blow up the Houses of Parliament. They put gunpowder under the house next door to the parliament building. But on the morning of 5th November 1605 soldiers found them and arrested. King James I ordered to have a great bonfire on the night of 5th November to commemorate that event. Today people burn an effigy of Guy Fawkes, bake potatoes, eat a traditional cake and other food. People also enjoy fireworks display. Children used to take their home-made guys out in the street and ask for “a penny for the Guy”.
