Spot and the Chickens

1. Before reading:

Read the words and try to guess what the story is about.

1. a doghouse – конура 4. a chicken - цыпленок

2. somebody – кто-нибудь 5. a hen - курица

3. to run away from – убегать от 6. to peck – клевать

2. Read the fairy-tale and answer the question:

Why doesn’t Spot want to play with the chickens?

Spot is a little dog. He is black and white. He lives in a little doghouse. Spot likes to play. He wants to have somebody to play with.

He sees three little yellow chickens. He wants to play with the chickens. Spot runs after the chickens. The chickens run away from Spot and say, “Peep, peep, peep…”

Spot runs and jumps, but the chickens don’t want to play with Spot. They say, “Peep, peep, peep …”

Mother Hen sees Spot. She runs up to Spot and pecks him on his black nose. Little Spot says, “Bow – wow – wow …!”

Now Spot doesn’t want to play with the chickens.

3. Choose the right sentences and read them.

1. Spot is brown.

Spot is grey.

Spot is black and white.

2. Spot wants to play with the kittens.

Spot wants to play with the chickens.

Spot wants to play with the puppies.

3. The chickens want to play with a cat.

The chickens want to play with Spot.

The chickens don’t want to play with Spot.

4. Mother Hen plays with Spot.

Mother Hen doesn’t peck Spot on his nose.

Mother Hen pecks Spot on his nose.

4. Say, who is it? But, first read the words.

1) brave – храбрый 3) to be afraid of – бояться

2) to defend – защищать

1. She is brave. She loves her children and always defends them.

2. He is little. He is afraid of Mother Hen.

3. They are small and yellow. They don’t want to play with a puppy.

5. Now, let’s speak about your family.

Answer the following questions:

1) Who is small in your family?

2) Who is brave in your family?

3) Who defends you in your family?

4) Can you defend anybody?

5) What are you afraid of?

The Sky is Falling.

1. Before reading:

Read the title and try to guess what this fairy – tale is about.

What do you think? Can the sky really fall?

2. Read the fairy – tale and answer the question:

Who invites animals to the house?

The Grey Hen lives in a small house near a garden. One day an apple falls on her head. “The sky is falling”, says the Grey Hen. “I must go and tell the Turkey.” So she walks and walks.

By and by she meets a Duck.

“Where are you going, Grey Hen?” asks the Duck.

“The sky is falling”, says the Grey Hen. “I am going to tell the Turkey.”

“May I go with you?” asks the Duck.

“Yes, you may”, says the Grey Hen. “Let us go to the Turkey together.” So the Grey Hen and the Duck walk and walk.

By and by they meet a Goose.

“Where are you going?” asks the Goose.

“The sky is falling”, says the Grey Hen. “We are going to tell the Turkey.”

“May I go with you?” asks the Goose.

“Yes, you may”, says the Grey Hen. “Let us go to the Turkey together.” So the Grey Hen, the Duck and the Goose walk and walk.

By and by they meet a Fox.

“Where are you going?” asks the Fox.

“The sky is falling”, says the Grey Hen. “We are going to tell the Turkey.”

“Come to my house”, says the Fox. “The sky is not falling there.”

“Very well!” say the Grey Hen, the Duck and the Goose.

They all go into the Fox’s house, but they never come out again.

3. Name the animals in order they appear in this fairy – tale.


4. Answer the questions:

1) Where does the Grey Hen live?

2) What does one day fall on her head?

3) Where does the Grey Hen go?

4) Whom does she meet?

5) Why do the Grey Hen, the Duck and the Goose never come out of the Fox’s house?

6) Who is clever and cunning in this story?

7) Who is stupid in this story?

5. Let’s speak about you and your friends.

1) Is it good to be clever or stupid?

2) Is it good to be cunning?

3) Have you got cunning friends?

4) Why do you think they are cunning?
