A tooth is a bony formation located in the mouth of most vertebrates . Teeth are designed to capture, hold and chew food, they are also used for tearing it.

A tooth has two main parts. The crown is the part you can and the root is the unseen part that is below the gum and fastens the tooth in the jaw bone . The outer part of the tooth and the hardest substance in the body is enamel . Underneath this is layer of dentin which is softer than enamel but similar to bone. In the middle of the tooth is the pulp . This contains cells, blood vessels and the nerve of the tooth. The pulp is protected by a layer called cementum which covers the root and keeps the tooth securely attached in the gum.

Did you know…? Teeth are made of the hardest material in the body – enamel. To develop good enamel, you need calcium – so drink milk. To keep your teeth in good condition, use a toothpaste with fluoride. Pigs have 44 teeth. Humans grow two sets of teeth in their life: milk teeth (about 20) and permanent teeth (about 32). Tooth decay is caused by the acid that the bacteria in the mouth make from the sugar we eat.
