Easter comes in spring. It occurs on the first Sunday after the first full Moon.

It is a religious holiday. The word Easter comes from the Anglo-Saxon goddess of the dawn. Her spring festival was celebrated in April. Easter is a Christian festival now. The Christians are glad over the fact that Jesus Christ rose from the dead. It has some symbols .

• Jesus Christ, the son of god, was resurrected and the Cross is a very important symbol too. The egg is a symbol of a new life. Easter eggs are mostly red and are very beautiful.

• The legengs holds that once a poor woman decorated colourful eggs for her children to find.As soon as the hidden eggs were found a large bunny was seen hoping away. This is the root of the Easter Bunny that we know and love today.

• People buy new clothes to wear on Easter Sunday. There is a popular tradition to wear three new things at Easter. They believe these will bring good luck in the year. They go out into the streets. This procession is called The Easter Parade.

Easter lasts for a week. The three most important days are Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday. On Maundy Thursday, the king or a queen of England gives money to poor people. The tradition is very old. On good Friday, people eat fish instead of meat. They also eat special hot cakes with a cross on the top. They call these cakes hot cross buns. On Easter Sunday, People eat a traditional roast dinner with lamb, potatoes and vegetables. They also give each other chocolate Easter eggs.

EASTER ROLL

• Easter Roll is a tradition of rolling eggs down grassy hills. Children push an egg with a long handled spoon. The old Lancashire legend says that the broken eggshells should be carefully crashed afterwards or they would be stolen by witches.
