A Terrible Exam Day

Yesterday was the worst day of my school life. I had my final Maths exam, and I completely messed it up. Looking back, I can see all the mistakes I made.

First of all, I woke up late because my alarm clock didn't go off. I must have forgotten to set it the night before. I ran to school without breakfast and arrived just as the exam was starting. I should have left earlier, but I didn't.

When I sat down, I realised I didn't have a spare pen. My only pen stopped working after five minutes. I could have asked my classmate to lend me one, but he was sitting too far away. The examiner was very strict and didn't allow us to talk.

The questions were so difficult! I should have revised more, but I had skipped several classes last term. My friend Tom, who always attends every lesson, was writing quickly. He must have prepared really well.

Then I saw something shocking. The boy next to me was looking at his phone under the desk. He was trying to cheat! I couldn't believe it. If the principal finds out, he'll definitely get a detention — or even worse, he might be expelled.

After the exam, I talked to my friends. "The exam was impossible!" I said. But Sarah disagreed: "Really? I thought it was okay. You can't have studied the right topics." She was probably right.

Now I'm worried about my report card. If I get a low grade, my parents will be upset. I need to work harder next term. I want to graduate from school with good results and maybe even get a university degree one day. But first, I need to pass this exam!

  1. Translate the words in bold. Choose 3 of them and make sentences and MODAL PERFECT.

  3. Tom did well on the exam. He _______________ (must have studied / can't have studied) very hard.

  4. The boy with the phone was cheating. He _______________ (shouldn't have used / mustn't have used) his phone.

  5. The exam was difficult because the author _______________ (should have attended / must have attended) more classes.

WRITING

You have received a letter from your English pen-friend, Tom, who writes:

"...I've just started at a new school. It's very big, but I like it. What about you? What's your school like? What's your favourite subject? Have you got any school rules?"

Write him a letter and answer his 3 questions. Write 80-100 words.

Remember the rules of letter-writing:

Личное электронное письмо должно содержать:

Plan:

Dear Jim/Alice,

Thank you very much for your letter. I am happy to hear from you.

In your email asked me about …

I have to go now and do my homework. Write back soon.

Best wishes,

Dear Ann,

Thank you very much for your letter. I am happy to hear from you.

In your email you asked me about books. Actually, I try to read all the books from my literature list. Usually I read about 15 books a year. Detective stories are my favourite, for example, the stories about Sherlock Holmes. I enjoy them because I like imagining myself as a detective. As for my Literature lessons, I usually learn about life of the greatest writers and poets of all times.

I have to go now and do my homework. Write back soon.

Best wishes,

Kate
