The man and the monkeys.

One day a man who made caps went to the market to sell them. It was a long way to go. The man passed  by a long river. When he was in the forest, he decided to rest a little, as the day was very hot and he was very tired.

The man saw a large tree. He decided to rest under it.

As the sun was very hot, the man put on one of the caps on his head and put all the other caps on the ground under the tree. The man had lunch, then lay down and soon was asleep. When he woke up, he could not find the caps.

Where are my caps?” he cried. He could not find them anywhere.

Suddenly he looked up. And what did he see? He saw many monkeys in the tree, and each monkey had the man’s cap on its head!

Give me back my caps!” cried the man. But the monkeys could not understand the man. They laughed, jumped and played with the caps.

The man asked and asked the monkeys to give him back his caps, but the monkeys didn’t understand him. They only laughed.

The man got very much angry with the monkeys. He took off his cap, threw it on the ground and cried: “If you want my caps, you may take this one, too!”

And do you know what the monkeys did? They took off the caps and threw them on the ground!

That’s how the man got back all his caps.

Certainly, he was very glad. He quickly took all his caps and went away.

The Bear in School

One day a boy found a brown bear-cub in the forest. He was very little and looked like a puppy. The boy carried him home.

Every day the boy went to school. The bear-cub went with him and waited for the boy in the field.

At first the other boys were afraid of the bear-cub, but soon they became great friends. Many of them brought food to school and gave the bear-cub some bread and butter.

The bear-cub lived with the boy for a long time. But one day he went to the forest and did not come back. Everybody was very sorry for the bear-cub.

Many years passed. New schoolboys came to the old school. One very cold winter day the door opened, and a large brown bear walked into the classroom.  The boys were afraid. Some ran to the door, others jumped out of the window.

But the bear did not touch the pupils. He walked up to the fire and warmed himself. He felt quite at home. He was very glad to get into such a warm room. He sat by the fire, and then walked up to the table and ate some bread. Then the bear walked out of the house.

Some young men of the village came with their guns to kill the bear. They soon found him but did not kill him. They saw some marks on his skin and understood that the bear was the old friend of their schooldays. They let him go back into the forest.

A Day in the Life of Simon Carrot

First of all, I must tell you about myself. I am thirteen and I am in the third class at a Grammar school in Manchester

What a terrible day! I woke up late and didn’t have time to eat my breakfast. I couldn’t find my books or my school cap. At last I found my books in the bathroom; and at last, I found my cap — my dog was playing with it! I was nearly late for school.

The first lesson on Monday morning is maths. What a terrible way to start the week! Mr Green, the maths teacher, took our homework. He saw that my exercise - book was dirty. He was very angry and gave me a bad mark for it.

Then he gave us some tasks to do. I sat next to Jane, who was  fat and not very pleasant — but very good at maths. I asked her to tell me the answers, but she didn`t want.

The next lesson was French. I like French. It’s nice to be able to talk to somebody in another language.

At last, it was eleven o’clock: time for break. Nell gave me a piece of cake to eat with my milk. She also gave me her Latin homework to copy. I think she likes me and she’s a nice girl.

After break, we had two lessons of  Latin! They are bad: I hate Latin!

Mr Williams punished me for talking to Nell.

A Day in the Life of Simon Carrot

At 12: 30 pm was time for lunch. I was very hungry! I sat down at the table feeling very happy because the Latin lessons were over. And then I saw what was for lunch: meat pie, boiled potatoes and cabbage. I hate vegetables! But I ate a little, because I was so hungry.

Then I went into the playground with my friends Pete Sharp and John Ford and we played football.

After lunch we had a history lesson. I don’t usually like history, but I liked this lesson very much. We learned about the Battle of Hastings in 1066. We were on holiday in Hastings last summer. I said I would bring some photographs of our holiday to school the next week.

At three o’clock it was time for my favourite lesson of the week: games. We played a very exciting game of football but it ended in a draw.

After school at four o’clock, Pete and I bought some sweets and I went to his house to listen to music.

Mum was angry because I didn’t arrive home till half past seven. She doesn`t like when I come home late. My supper was cold.

I did my French homework but I didn’t do my history homework. There was an interesting programme on television.

The Fox and the cock

One day in summer a fox saw a cock near a village. It was time for dinner and the fox decided to eat the cock. He went up to the cock and said to him: “Your father could sing very well. Can you sing well too?” the cock shut his eyes and began to sing. The fox caught the cock in its mouth and ran away.

A farmer saw the fox and cried out to the other farmers: “Look! A fox has caught our cock! Look! Look! That is our cock.” The cock heard the farmer and said to the fox: “Do you hear what that farmer is saying? He says that I’m their cock. Tell them that I’m your cock now.” When the fox opened its mouth to say it, the cock jumped up into a tree. He cried out to the fox: “I’m not your cock, I’m their cock.” The poor fox beat his head on the tree and said: “Mouth, you talk too much and we have no dinner today.”

Jonathan Swift and his Servant.

Jonathan Swift, the famous English writer, once went into the country with his servant. In the morning when he wanted to put on his boots, he saw that they were not clean.

How is this, Tom?” said Swift when he saw them. “Why haven’t you cleaned my boots?”

You see,” said Tom “It’s very dirty out today. If you go out, your boots again will be dirty, so I didn’t clean them.”

Swift thought a little and said, “All right, Tom. Go and get ready, we’ll go out in a minute or two.”

But,” cried Tom, “I haven’t had my breakfast. I am hungry.”

I know,” said Swift, “but if you have your breakfast you will again be hungry in a few hours, so today you will have no breakfast.”

He laughed and laughed. Then he said, “All right, mouse, run away. I am not going to kill you. Will you help me? Ha! Ha! Hal” One day some people placed a large net in the forest. Who can help me, please?” “Oh, just a minute“, the mouse said to the lion. “I shall help you. Do you think, I cannot help you? Oh, you are wrong. Let ‘s see what I can do.”

The mouse worked very quickly with his teeth and soon the lion stood up. “Well,” said the mouse. “You laughed at me. Now you see that a little mouse can help a great lion.”

The lion did not answer. “Thank you, little mouse” and went away into the forest.

SHUT THE DOOR.

Jonathan Swift, the famous English author who wrote “Gulliver’s Travels”, liked order in everything. All the people in his house, for example, had to shut the door behind them when they came into a room and when they left it.

One day a maidservant came and asked him to let her visit her sister who lived ten miles away. Swift not only agreed, but let her go there in his own carriage. The girl was so happy that she forgot to shut the door when she left the room. Swift let her go; but about half an hour later he ordered one of the servants to ride after the carriage, and tell the girl come back. Much against her wish the poor girl had to turn back. When she came into Swift’s room, her face was unhappy and she asked him what he wanted.

“I only want you to shut the door,” was his answer.

“Now you may go to visit your sister. I wish you a pleasant journey.

THE ELEPHANT.

One Sunday morning Mr. Armstrong got up early to make a cup of tea. He always got up early to make tea for the family on Sunday because he wanted them to get up and start working in the garden with him. But no one else wanted to get up. His wife sometimes stayed in bed till ten o’clock, and his daughter, who was usually out late on Saturday evenings, seldom got up till it was time for lunch.

This Sunday morning Mr. Armstrong went into the kitchen and stopped suddenly. There was an elephant in the garden. It was standing on the lawn, eating the roses. An elephant! Mr. Armstrong looked and looked-and the elephant looked at him; then it went on eating the roses.

Mr. Armstrong ran upstairs to wake his wife. “Quick, wake up, there’s an elephant in the garden. “His wife opened one eye. “Don’t be funny, it’s too early.”

“But I’m not being funny. There is an elephant in the garden. Get up and look.”

His wife laughed. “No dear, I know you. You always say such silly things to get me up. Go and make some tea instead.” And she went back to sleep.

Mr. Armstrong went into his daughter’s room. “Quick, wake up, there’s an elephant in the garden.” His daughter opened one eye. “Don’t be silly, daddy,” she said.

“But I’m not being silly. Come and see for yourself.”

“No, go and bring the elephant up to me instead,” said his daughter and went back to sleep.

So Mr. Armstrong telephoned the police, and five policemen came with some men from the zoo. They took the elephant back to the zoo with them. When Mr. Armstrong’s wife and daughter came down-much, much later-they were very angry that he had not woken them up so that they could see the elephant, too.

TEA.

Every morning we like to begin our day with a cup of tea. We drink tea every day. But more than three hundred years ago most of the people in Europe did not know anything about tea.

There is a story of an English sailor, who traveled to the East, the West, and the South. He was in India and China.

One day he came home and brought some tea leaves as a present for his mother. She told her friends about the present and asked them to a “tea party”. When her friends came to the house, the old lady brought in a large plate and put it in the middle of the table. There were some brown leaves of the tea on it. The old woman’s friends began to eat them. Of course nobody liked the tealeaves. At that moment the sailor came in. He looked at the table and said: “Mother, what have you done with the tealeaves?”

“I have boiled them as you told me to do.”

“And what have you done with the water?”

“I threw it away, of course”-answered the woman. “Now you may throw away the leaves too”-said her son.

This story shows that people in England knew very little about tea at that time and they liked to tell jokes about it.

As he knew, that the trip would take only two days, he decided that he could live without eating those two days. So, he bought a ticket and got on the ship. When dinnertime came, he was hungry. In the evening he was even hungrier, but when the waiter came to ask him to have supper, he said he was seasick, and he went to sleep hungry. The next morning the Englishman felt half-dead with hunger: “I shall eat”, he said to himself, “even if they throw me into the sea”. So, when dinnertime came, he went to the dining-room and ate everything that was on the table before him. When dinner was over, he quickly got up and went to his cabin. In the evening when the ship was not far from the harbor of London, he ate his supper and said to the waiter. “Bring me the bill for my meals.”

But the waiter asked: “What bill?” “For the dinner and supper I ate.” “But you paid for your meals when you bought the ticket”, answered the waiter.

Turner, the great English painter had a dog, which he loved very much. One day the dog fell down and broke a leg. Turner sent for a doctor. He did not want to send for a veterinary; he sent for the best doctor in London.

When the doctor came, Turner said: “Doctor, I am happy you have come. My dog has broken a leg. I know that you are too great a doctor for work of this kind, but please, do it. It is so important for me”.

The doctor was angry but he did not show it. He did, what the painter asked him to do. Next day the doctor asked Turner to come to his house. “The doctor wants to see me about my dog”, thought Turner.

When Turner reached the doctor’s house, the doctor said:” Mr. Turner, I am so happy to see you. I want to ask you to paint my door. I know that you are too great a painter for this work, but please do it. It is so important for me”.

Two Friends and the Bear.

Once two friends were in a thick forest, when they met a bear. One of the men was afraid of the bear. He ran to a high tree and got up into it. The other man understood that he couldn’t stand up against a big bear. He lay down on the grass. “The bear will think that I’m dead,” he said to himself. The man thought that bears do not attack dead people. The bear came up to the man on the grass, sniffed at his nose and ears and went away.

The other man got down from the tree. “What did the bear say in your ear?” he asked him.

He told me,” was the answer, “not to go into the forest with a bad friend who will not help you when there is a danger”
