 Once upon a time a boy-orphan lived . He worked as a herd  boy , he herded goats . One day he drove goats past a  rye field . The goats climbed over the fence and went to rye .

 The herd boy ran and ran. He shouted and his voice was overstrained. The obstinated goats ran and trampled down the rye’s ears. The herd boy sat on a stone and cried.

 Suddenly a squirrel hoped and asked: Why do you cry? I can’t drive the goats from the rye field. Is it the trouble? I will drive them fast! – says the squirrel and hoped to the field.  It ran and ran after the goats and got tired. It sat near the herd boy and began crying too.

 A gadfly flew. It’s funny, - it said. You are so big, and you cry. Who hurts you? We can’t drive the goats from the rye field. I will help you, - said the gadfly. You can’t, - answered the herd boy. I drove, the squirrel drove, the fox drove, the bear drove too. But we couldn’t drive them.  The gadfly buzzed. I will drive.

 The goats heard than the gadfly flew over, and they ran, jumped over the fence and went to the road. The gadfly flew over and buzzed. I will drive you.  The herd boy held  a long switch and  ran after the goats. Even he  didn’t say “ Thanks” to his friends.
