Introduction

My name is Serov Vladislav. I'm in the 5th form of Gymnasium No. 53. I called my work "Unusual and unknown London". London is the capital of England. Whatever it was famous and well-traveled by tourists, it will always remain a box with surprises. In my project, I want to tell you about the unusual and unknown to the general public of London. The head of my work: Tselinskaya Irina Veniaminovna, my English teacher.

    1. Purpose of work

To expand knowledge about unknown to the general public of sights of London.

    1. Tasks
  1. Collect and study the material about the unusual sights of London.

  2. Analyze the information collected.

  3. Create a computer presentation on the basis of the information received.

  4. To form an interest in learning the language for verbal communication.

    1. Methods of research
  • Search engine - search information on the Internet, library fund, additional literature, audio and video materials.

  • Analysis - selecting only the most important and interesting information on the topic.

  • Synthesis - generalization of the information received.

    1. Practical significance of the work
  • can be used in English classes, as well as other events dedicated to acquaintance with the unknown sights of London, at school and city scientific and practical conferences of students;

  • expands the horizon, develops visual-figurative thinking;

  • allows you to travel around London without leaving the classroom.

    1. Hypothesis

Sights known and unknown - this is the most striking example of the culture and history of England, through the knowledge of which you can come to an understanding of the way of life of the English themselves and to perfect knowledge of English.

The base part

London is the capital of England. Whatever it was famous and well-traveled by tourists, it will always remain a box with surprises.

Unusual London is always more interesting than a tourist one. Yes, famous throughout the world, the sights of London do their job - lure hundreds of thousands of travelers. But he is interesting to others: his history, way of life, traditions.

In my project, I want to tell you about the unusual and unknown to the general public of London.
I will try in my project to gather places not only unusual, but also possessing some kind of peculiar atmosphere. Visiting them (for starters, of course, virtually, virtually), knowledge about this city will be supplemented by a huge baggage of emotions and impressions. I hope that this material will be useful for everyone who plans to visit this magnificent city in the future.
Everything is put on the conveyor: another pack of guests is loaded into buses, transported along the run-in route, and in passing, they sell something. And now, like, everything is looked through. But any large city is fraught with a lot of secrets and secrets that will not be shown on an ordinary excursion. These places may not be in the guidebooks, but they should definitely be seen. In my project, I will talk about such places in London.

  1. Unusual London

London is not alone.

Everyone firmly believes that London is the capital of England. Yes, but London is not alone in the world! There are several other cities with the same name. They are located in the US, Canada and some other countries. It's funny that Canadian London, like the capital of Great Britain, is located on the River Thames.

Greenwich

Unusual London also because the capital passes the zero meridian, which is also called Greenwich by the name of the area of the city of Greenwich. (Application 1)

No traffic jams

In the center of London, there is almost never a traffic jam. Most likely, because the entrance to the center of the capital is paid. (Application 2)

Residents and tourists

On average, about half of the people in the central streets of the capital of Great Britain are tourists.

The leader in multilingualism

According to some information in the capital speak the largest number of languages (compared to other cities in the world), namely, 300.

London Eye

To build one of the most famous sights - the London Eye, it took hundreds of specialists from five countries and seven years of permanent work. (Application 3)

City of billionaires

London is a city of billionaires. The capital of the United Kingdom is home to 72 billionaires.

The driest city

The statement that London is one of the rainiest cities is a myth! In fact, it is considered one of the driest cities in Europe. Every year, only 590 millimeters of precipitation falls here. For comparison: in Milan - 1000, and in Florence - 870 millimeters. (Application 4)

The dirtiest city

London is recognized as one of the dirtiest metropolises in Europe. Scientists came to the conclusion that the problem of polluted air is underestimated, and that in order to solve it, it is necessary to review European legislation.

    1. Unknown London
The seven noses of Soho

Walking in Soho, you can perfectly diversify your leisure time, if you go in search of seven noses. These original artifacts appeared in London in the late twentieth century thanks to the artist Rick Buckley. His action became a protest against the establishment of surveillance cameras in the city. They say that then the artist argued with friends that he could "leave his nose" with the London surveillance system and place 35 copies of his nose around the city. Without being in the field of view of the cameras, Buckley even coveted such capital attractions as the Admiralty Arch. It is not known for sure how many of them remain until today, but it is believed that those who find seven noses in Soho capital, expect wealth. (Application 5)

The Rolling Bridge

Lovers of unusual buildings Rolling Bridge just have to taste: even a small drawbridge the British could turn into an original art object. When ships pass through the Grand Union canal, this bridge does not just rise, but curls into an octagonal shape on one of the banks. Designed by the British designer Thomas Haterwick, for which in 2005 he received the British Structural Steel Design award. (Application 6)

The Thin House

At first glance it seems that the width of the house number 5 on the corner of South Terrace and Thurloe Square is just a couple of meters. However, if you look closely, then this optical illusion creates an original layout - the rear of the house is still expanding. Design for the building was chosen not accidentally: just behind it passes the railway line. (Application 7)

Thames Barrier

An ignorant person is unlikely to recognize in these futuristic structures a dam that controls the river. You might think that aliens have landed here, or the military is experiencing some sort of weapon of the future. In fact, this structure is almost 30 years old, and it was built because of the threat of repeated floods that occurred in the areas adjacent to the river earlier. Look at this powerful defender, definitely worth it. (Application 8)

Wooden escalator at the Greenford metro station

The London Underground is one of the oldest in the world. Its first branch was opened in 1863. Structurally, the London subway has one of the longest escalators compared to underground systems in other cities and countries. Previously, a tree was used to make these moving staircases, and at Greenford, one such wooden escalator is still in effect. (Application 9)

Warner Bros. Studio Tour London (Harry Potter Museum)

As you know, the cult series of Harry Potter films was shot in England, and in this case studio Warner Bros. Made, probably, the most pleasant of possible acts, to which she was only capable: the film studio in which the film was shot, was converted into a museum. In it, visitors can look at the scenery used in the shooting, and learn a lot about the shooting process, the huge work of decorators, costumers and artists, the development of special effects and stunt tricks. (Application 10)

The Shard

The Shard is the tallest building in London and the 45th tallest skyscraper in the world. Initially, the construction of this technological miracle was hampered by numerous opponents who consider the future structure to be inadequate for the usual view of London, however, a building permit was obtained, and now this spire of glass and metal, 390 meters high, symbolizes a new era in the life of the city. Particularly noteworthy is that since early 2013, it already hosts excursions. (Application 11)

MI6 Building

Let's say according to the film 007: Coordinates "Skyfoll" Thiago Rodriguez and managed to carry out a terrorist attack in the building MI6, but in real life to get close to this fortress of the British Secret Intelligence Service will not be easy. It is known that even during the development of the building project, the developer was put forward special security requirements, and they are still classified. In the English intelligence community, the building is jokingly called Legoland because of its similarity to the Lego constructor, as well as Babylon-on-Thames due to its similarity with the ziggurat. Look at this miracle that appears in all the late James Bond films, certainly worth it. (Application 12)

Conclusion

Studying the most popular museums and tourist attractions of the capital of Great Britain, I concluded that London is an amazing city. It united the magnificent royal palaces and cognitive museums, modern infrastructure and traditions of the past. Sightseeing is the most vivid example of the culture and history of England, through the knowledge of which one can come to an understanding of the way of life of the English themselves and to perfect knowledge of English.
Despite the fact that annually published a large number of guidebooks, London and to this day remains one of the most mysterious and attractive cities in the world. In my work I researched only some of the huge number of attractions of this beautiful European capital.
Of course, my work will be useful to those people who are going to visit London and use it for several days. Computer presentation will make an unforgettable journey through London without leaving the classroom.
