St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland
Go to any Irish city or town on 17 th March and you’ll see a strange sight: people dressed in green, wearing a three-leaved clover – the shamrock and marching in parades.
What is all about?
It’s St. Patrick’s Day, of course!
Who is St. Patrick?
He is the patron saint of Ireland. He was probably born in Wales in about AD 385 and died in 461 on 17 th March, and that’s why this feast day is celebrated on this day.
St. Patrick brought Christianity to the nation. He is also known for driving the snakes away from Ireland.
The national symbol of Ireland is shamrock and according to legend Saint Patrick chose this plant to illustrate the Holy Trinity to the Irish.
St. Patrick’s Day all over the world
Irish people all over the world celebrate St. Patrick’s day and big parades take place in New York, Chicago and Boston in the USA
Green is one of the symbols of Ireland and this festival takes place in the spring when plants are just beginning to grow. Green is also the color of the shamrock, the special symbol associated with St. Patrick.
