Procedure of the lesson
I. Organization moment
- Good morning! How are you? I’m very glad to welcome you at our open lesson. Good morning to our quests. Have a nice time with us. And all of you good luck!
- Today we will discuss another story by Gilbert Keith Chesterton, retell it, do some interesting tasks and have a really good time. I hope.
- Are you ready for our lesson?
II. Warming-up
- Let’s have a fun and play a communicative game: Hot seat. Do you remember this game? Who can explain the rule? Divide into two groups. Choose your leader – your guesser. One team after another. The guesser sits down here, and I’ll put a list of words at the blackboard, so the guesser can’t see it. The task of the rest team is to explain the words. You can explain words, give their synonym. You have 2 minutes for all words. That team which guesses more words in these two minutes or does it more quickly win.
- O’kay, let’s start. Divide into two groups. First team – come here. Name the number from 1 to 4… You time starts right now!
- And the winner is the first (second) team. Well done! It is very interesting and amazing, is it? And now let us start the lesson.
III. Discussing and fixing
- Today’s story was written by G. Chesterton. What do you remember about him?
1. About the author:
- I’ll give your ten minutes to prepare a cluster – the scheme of his life. Work in two groups. The scheme of somebody’s life is the scheme where you put one by one main events that happened with this person.
- Please change your works. Tell me is this cluster informative? Does it have the whole information about the author?
- Put the clusters on the board. Who wants to tell us about Chesterton?
- Does anybody want to add something?
- Very good. So, Gilbert Chesterton is a very famous British author and he wrote many stories. And today we will read his story: The Adventure of Major Brown.
According to its name how do you think what is this story about? What is the genre of this story?
- It is detective story about one man. Major Brown. At home you read this story and now let’s do some exercises to check if you understand this story and if you remember it.
2. Comprehension task:
- Do exercises on cards. I’ll give you five minutes for this task. Work in pairs, please.
Complete the following sentences occurring in the story:
1. He had never liked to be a military man, so
2. But it was not only the beauty of the flowers that surprised him. It was something else:
3. The only person the Major saw in that room was
4. A second later Brown was in the street again, and he was in tie – in time to
5. He pushed the door of the coal cellar and stepped in, feeling in his pockets for matches. As his right hand was occupied
6. But the Major was holding him by the coat collar and was not going to let him out of the cellar. Suddenly
7. When the Major finished the story of his mysterious adventures, he noticed that
8. “You see, the Adventure and Romance Agency has been started ”
9. Major Brown married Miss Jameson,
10. They are living a happy life, and the disciplined veteran

- What did you write on it? How did you answer? Is it correct? All agree with that? Next, please.

3. Role play.
- Tell me please, what kind of man is this Major Brown? Who is Major Brown? How can you characterize him?
- I’ll give you eight minutes. Make up a short sketch of him. Look through the story and find out information which can help you to understand his nature. May be some his words, his behavior or appearance? Work in group. Prepare a short sketch about this character using citation from the text.
- And now then you perfectly understand the nature of Major Brown I offer you to play a role game. You need to know what kind of man he is because almost all of you will play him.
- I offer you to imagine yourself Major Brown and other characters of the story. Remind me what characters are in this story? (Major Brown, old man with pansies, beautiful lady, a man who tried to kill major Brown, brothers Grant, Northover).
- I’ll give you cards with situation in it. Your task is to act out monologue or dialogue which present on the cards. If you choose dialogue you can choose a partner. You can choose anyone from your group. You have to prepare monologues and dialogues for 8 or more sentences. You have only ten minutes for it. Have you any questions?
Card 1 (Monologue): Imagine that you are Major Brown. You had retired from the army and now lived on a small pension. You had never liked being a military man. And you took a small house in a quiet London street.
Act out your thought about your future, about your past. Your hopes for the rest of your life.
Card 2 (Dialogue): Student A. You are Major Brown. You are walking along a narrow street and saw beautiful pansies in a barrow of one man. You want to buy it no matter what. Student B. You are this man with a barrow full of pansies. You don’t want to sell it in no case.
Act out dialogue. At least man with pansies offers Major Brown to get onto one wall.
Card 3 (Monologue): Imagine that you are Major Brown. You are standing on the wall and see the finest collection of pansies in England, but also you see the note – “Death to Major Brown”.
Act out your feelings in that moment.
Card 4 (Dialogue): Student A. You are Major Brown. You are in this strange house. You want to know what is happening. Student B. You are unknown lady. You can’t say anything.
Act out this situation. Major Brown have to be insistent (настойчивым). You don’t like that kind of jokes.
Card 5 (Monologue): Imagine that you are Major Brown. You’ve just been on the coal cellar and somebody tried to kill you.
Act out what do you fell. What are you going to do? Finally you remember about one private detective and decide to go to him.
Card 6 (Monologue): Imagine that you are Major Brown. You’ve just found out what really happened in that house. It was mistake. You are not Mister Brown for whom all this was played.
Act out your inner monologue about that. Remember your fear.
Card 7 (Dialogue): Student A. You are Major Brown. Student B. You are Mrs. Brown.
Act out the conversation between you two remembering this incident after your marriage.
- Who has the card number one? You will be the first. Let’s start. Listen carefully please. At the end we should decide who present the best monologue or dialogue.
- Come here, please. At the blackboard you can see the situations.
- So how do you think whose monologue or dialogue was presented best? I like all monologues and dialogues. You did an excellent job! Thank you!
4. Discussion:
- Do you remember the name of Mr. Northover's agency? The Adventure and Romance Agency. Find in the text what this agency does. What problems solves. Would you like to contact this agency?
- Have you ever taken park in a debate?
- Work in groups. Prepare arguments for and against treatment in such agencies. You have ten minutes for this task. You are going to answer this question: Is it better to live your own life or go to agencies like this and invent it.
- We do not have a winner and a loser. We just discussed this issue and everyone made a conclusion for themselves.
5. Retelling:
- At the end of our lesson I want you to retell the story. For this you have to prepare a plan of retelling.
- From which parts can it consist of? Prepare a plan, please. Divide text into several parts. Entitle these parts. You can work in pairs, individually or in groups. As you wish. Then write down your plans on the blackboard. Here you can see my plan. You can use it either.
- Choose the best, please.
- I’ll give you five minutes to repeat the story.
- Retell the story. Listen carefully. I can stop you in any moment and another of you will continue to retell the story.
