SECOND CONDITIONAL

The Second Conditional is a grammatical structure used to talk unreal situations in the present or advice. It expresses a conditional statement with an if-clause followed by a result clause.

The structure of the Second Conditional can be explained as follows:

if-clause (hypothesis)

Main clause (result clause)

Conditionals Type 2

If + past simple or past continuous

would/ could/ might + bare infinitive

  • If I had money, I would travel round the world. (but I don't have money - untrue in the present)

  • If I were you, I would take an umbrella. (advice)

Some key points to remember about the Second Conditional:

  1. Use "if + past simple" in the if-clause and "would + bare inf." in the result clause.

  2. It is used to talk about hypothetical, unreal, or unlikely situations in the present or future.

  3. It expresses a condition that is not currently true, but could potentially happen in the future.

  4. It is often used to discuss dreams, wishes, or situations that are unlikely to come true.
