Our family is not large. I have got a father, a mother, а brother and a sister.
My father’s full name is……... He is an engineer. He likes his work and spends most of his time there. My father is a tall man with black hair and grey eyes.
My mother’s name is …... She is a pleasant-looking woman of about fourty. My mother is energetic and talkative. She is a teacher of music in my school. My mother always has a lot of work to do about the house.
My brother’s name is …. He is a student of the philological faculty of the University. He is clever and hard-working person. He often goes away for camping and hiking with his friends.
My little sister is … years old. Her name is….. Although she is little she knows a lot of wonderful things. She is very clever and intelligent. She learns English.. My sister is fond of music: she goes to musical school for piano lessons.
Our family is very united. We like to spend time together. In the evenings we like to discuss the events of the day. I have got many friends . We play different games together.
ANIMALSIN DANGER/THE EARTH IN DANGER
People have lived on our planet for many years. They lived and live on different continents in different countries. People depend on their planet, on the sun, on animals and plants around them.
Many animals and birds on the Earth are disappearing nowadays. Many of them are in danger. Indian tigers and African elephants are among them. People have hunted and killed many tigers in India and a lot of elephants in Africa. Tigers and elephants are often dangerous animals. Tigers can kill domestic animals and sometimes they can also kill men. Some people are afraid of tigers and kill them to save their domestic animals and their lives. But some people have often hunted tigers for fun and for their beautiful skin.
Modern life is bad for animals. The air is not fresh. The water is not clean. For example Lake Baikal is the deepest freshwater lake on the Earth.The lake is very beautiful but now it is in great danger, because of the factories. At some places the water in the lake is so dirty that it can kill animals and plants in Baikal and near it. You can find the names of some animals in the Red Book. Many animals and plants lose their homes because people cut down trees. Modern plantsand factories send a lot of smoke into air. This is also very bad, because nowadays it’s difficult to breathe in big cities.
So, the problem now is to protect life on the Earth, to save our planet for people.People must take special care of animals. We must find the right balance between land, people and animals. We must take care of nature!
Continents and Countries
The planet we live on is the Earth. The Earth is round. If you look at the Earth from the space you will be able to see land, seas, oceans, continents and even countries.
There are four oceans and six continents. The continents are: Europe and Asia, Africa, America, Australia, Antarctic. America consists of North America and South America. The continents are very large. Oceans and seas wash them and separate them from each other. There are usually many countries on the continents. For example, there are more than 40 countries in Africa, but there is only one country in Australia. It has got the same name as the continent. Australia is a very big country, but some countries are small. Iceland is a very small country. It is situated on the island in the north of Europe. Let’s name some countries from each continent: Russia, Great Britain, France, Germany, Spain, Italy are in Europe. China, India, Vietnam are in Asia. Canada and the United States are in America. Egypt is an African country.
The largest country in the world is Russia. The smallest country is the Vatican. All the countries have interesting people, places, animals and plants.
People of different nationalities live in these countries. They speak different languages. Each country has its national flag, anthem and its own traditions and customs.
The UK. Geographical/ Political Outlook
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (the UK) is the official name of the state which is situated in the British Isles. It consists of four countries (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). Their capitals are London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast.
The UK is an island state. The two main islands are Great Britain and Ireland. They are separated by the Irish Sea.The UK is separated from the continent by the English Channel and the Strait of Dover. The UK is also washed by the Atlantic Ocean in the north and the North Sea in the east.
In Britain the Queen is the Head of State, but she doesn’t rule the country. The Queen is a symbol of the country. She is very rich. She travels about the UK, meets different people and visits schools, hospitals and other special places. The Queen of Great Britain is also the Head of Commonwealth and the queen of Canada, Australia, New Zealand.
The real power in the country belongs to the British Parliament and to the British Government. The British Parliament has two ‘houses’: the House of Lords and the House of Commons. The House of Lords doesn’t have much power but it is very important as it can offer and change laws. The House of Commons makes laws about the policy of the country, taxes and many other things. The members of the House of Lords are not elected. These members are permanent. They are often aristocrats, people of the church, lawyers and former politicians. The members of the House of Commons are elected. The British people elect 650 members of the House of Commons every five years.
Health and Body Care
Nowadays our life is getting more and more tense. People live under the press of different problems, such as social, ecological, economic and others.
It is a pleasure to look at a strong, athletic man and slim beautiful lady.
It is known that healthy people live longer and their career is more successful. To look well you must follow some simple rules: don’t smoke and take drugs, don’t drink alcohol, don’t eat too much chips and sweets, eat more vegetables and fruits, sleep well, do exercises. We have two lessons of physical training once a week. We do exercises, run, jump, play basketball and pioneer ball, ski in winter. I think that we must have more lessons of physical training than we have now. For example American pupils have their PT lessons every day.
I like to play tennis, to ride a bicycle and to swim. But most of all I like roller-skating. I spent one or two hours every day skating with my friends and we’ve got a lot of fun!
The most healthy kinds of sports are swimming, running and cycling. Healthy food is also very important. Overeating causes many dangerous diseases. The daily menu should include meat, fruit and vegetables, milk product, which are rich in vitamins, fat, proteins and etc. To be healthy, people should get rid of their bad habits. It’s necessary to stop smoking and drinking much. Everyone should remember that cigarettes, alcohol and drugs destroy both body and brain.I know that these bad habits may cause serious problems to our health. I do my morning exercises, try to eat “healthy” food and think that this is really a good way to live.
Sports and Games in Great Britain
Most people in Great Britain are real sport-lovers. Even if they don't go in for sport, they like to talk about it. Cricket, football, rugby, tennis, table tennis, badminton, squash, canoeing and snooker were invented in Britain.
Britain's national sport is football or soccer.There is a certain type of football called rugby. The game is called so because it was originated at Rugby — a well-known English public school. It is a game played by two teams of fifteen players each. Rugby is played with an oval ball which can be carried by hands and kicked. It is a rather violent game that is why the players must be big and strong.
Cricket is a popular summer sport in Britain. There are many cricket clubs in the country. Cricket players wear a certain uniform — white boots, a white T-shirt and white trousers. There are two teams of 11 players each. Cricket is more popular among men, but it is also played by women and girls.
Tennis is another favourite sport of the Englishmen. People all over the world know Wimbledon which is the centre of lawn tennis. It takes place over two weeks in late June and early July.
Golf is a game of business community. In this game one has to knock a ball into a hole.There are a lot of other popular sports in Great Britain, for example, horseracing, swimming, running, cycling and rowing.
Shopping
When we want to buy something, we go to a shop. There are many kinds of shops in every town or city, but most of them have a food supermarket, a department store, men's and women's clothing stores, grocery, a bakery and a butchery.
I like to do my shopping at big department stores and supermarkets. They sell various goods under one roof and this is very convenient. A department store, for example, is composed of many departments: readymade clothes, fabrics, shoes, sports goods, toys, china and glass, electric appliances, cosmetics, curtains, cameras, records, etc. You can buy everything you like there.In the women's clothing department you can find dresses, costumes, blouses, skirts, coats and many other things. In the men's clothing department you can choose suits, trousers, overcoats, ties, etc.
In the knitwear department one can buy sweaters, cardigans, short-sleeved and long-sleeved pullovers, woollen jackets. In the perfumery they sell face cream and powder, lipstick, lotions and shampoos.
In a food supermarket we can also buy many different things at once: sausages, fish, sugar, macaroni, flour, tea. At the butcher's we can buy meat and poultry. At the bakery you buy brown and white bread, rolls, biscuits.
Another shop we usually go to is the greengrocery which is stocked by cabbage, potatoes, onions, cucumbers, carrots, beetroots etc. Everything is sold here ready-weighed and packed. If you call round at a dairy you can buy milk, cream, cheese, butter and many other products.
Travelling
Travelling to new and interesting countries has always attracted people. People work for some time and then they travel during their holidays. The fact that people travel to other places has many reasons. First of all, it’s always nice to stay in a different place for a change. Secondly, many people are interested in seeing new sights, exploring different cultures and else. Finally, when we travelwe relax and have a good time. The first travelers were explorers. They travelled to discover new lands, to find fame and wealth. Nowadays it is not dangerous and much more convenient. If you want to go somewhere hundreds of companies will help you. They will take care about your tickets and make all the reservations needed. If you don't speak the language interpreters will help you.
Nowadays people can choose how to travel: by train, by ship, by plane, by car or even by motorbike. There are also lots of travel agencies which can arrange everything for you.Travelling is always an interesting and exciting process. One of the modern ways of travelling is hiking, (travelling on foot). You can see all the beauty of natural sights: valleys, plains, hills, mountains, waterfalls, lakes etc. Hiking is especially popular with young people. The most popular way to spend a holiday in our country is a journey to the beach. Everybody enjoys relaxing under the sun and near the sea. When people travel theylearn about new countries, go sightseeing, rest and enjoy themselves.
