ROBERT WOOD

Make up a short biography of Robert Wood – one of the greatest American scientists, using the following facts, and find out what type of research he carried out.

1. to be recognized as the father of modern physical optics; to make а great contribution to molecular physics, ultrasound physics, astrophysics, quantum chemistry and other fields of physics and chemistry
to be born in 1868 in Boston, the USA in the family of а scientist-geologist, his mother to be а teacher of music.

2. to go tо classical school for children from good families
to be а poor pupil in humanities, especially in Greek. Latin and modern languages
to be very good at natural sciences, especially in physics, chemistry and astronomy

3. to finish school and enter Harvard University (1886)
to graduate from Chemical Department (1891)
to begin working as а laboratory assistant at John Hopkins University; to start experimental research in optics (the same year)

4. со get а PhD degree in chemistry at Madison University (1899); со continue
theoretical research in optics and molecular physics
to work as а lecturing professor ас different Universities of the USA, to carry out research in  diffraction and colour photography, tо do а lot of experiments in optics

5. to publish his main work called “Physical Optics” (1907)
to take part in World War I as an officer of the US War Department of Science and Inventions
(1915 - 1918); tо invent а signaling telescope for the American Navy, an ultrasound apparatus for spotting enemy submarines, an ultraviolet lamp for medical purposes

6. to become an honoured member of Royal and state scientific societies of different countries (after the war); to make friends with Einstein and Niels Bohr со get over 50 gold and silver medals for his scientific achievements from international scientific societies

7. to publish over 300 theoretical and experimental works (during his life) developing new ideas, facts and methods of research
to die at the age of 87 surrounded by his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and his devoted wife Gertrude (1955)

Say, what features of character helped Robert Wood in his scientific work.

ROBERT WOOD AS A PERSON
Episode 1
Read the story, retell it in brief.
Robert Wood was а fountain of ideas and tricks. Being а student at Harvard University he couldn't help playing physical or chemical tricks on people surrounding him. Не had always been crazy about the chemical reaction of combining sodium (Na) with water. One spring day after а heavy rainfall Robert wood decided to play а trick on people in the town market place. Не came to the large puddle  in the centre of the market square where people were buying and selling things very actively. Не attracted the people’s attention by а loud cry, and then spat in the puddle, throwing secretly а piece of sodium into it.

Can you guess what happened then?

What could the people in the market place think of R. Wood?

Once Robert Wood invited his future wife Gertrude Elms to sledge down the hills. The winter day was very cold and windy, and Gertrude was so delicate and sensitive to frost! Robert understood that she would get cold quite soon, and their outing would be spoilt unless he took some measures... That’ why he took а bottle of water and а bottle of concentrated sulphuric acid with him.

Can you guess what for? What did he do with these substances? Was the girl warm and pleased?

Episode 3
Read the story, retell it in brief.
By the 1930s Robert Wood had become а well-known scientist with the world fame. But he didn’t give up playing tricks on his friends, students and colleagues. Once the Publishing House of the British encyclopedia askеd Robert Wood to write an article on the unique qualities of the ultraviolet lamp invented by him in the years of World war I. Не was asked to make а photo of any
person as an illustration for this publication. As а model the professor chose а pretty secretary of John Hopkins University who was most unpopular among the students for her wicked character and rude manners. The young girl was pleased and flattered by the professor’s offer and agreed at once. Robert Wood made а photo-portrait of the girl in the ultraviolet light. А month later he showed the girl the volume of the British encyclopedia with his article. The poor girl was shocked at seeing her portrait. She understood that the professor had played а practical joke on her.

Can you explain what shocked the girl?

Episode 4
Read the story, retell it in brief.
Robert’s Wood sense of humor didn’t fail him even when he was busy doing experiments. Не was very clever using ordinary things in unexpected situations. Such was the case with his huge spectroscope which he hadn’t used for some time, so that its tube became all covered with a spider’s web inside. It was impossible tо take the tube to pieces, and it was too long to clean it with а brush. So Robert Wood put his favourite cat Photonon his lap and started thinking hard. Suddenly he was struck by а brilliant idea. Now he knew what could help him to clean the tube. In а minute the tube was clean and the spectroscope ready for work.

Could you guess what helped Robert Wood to clean the tube?

Episode 5
Read the story, retell it in brief.
In 1891 after graduating from Harvard University Robert Wood started working at John Hopkins University as а lecturer and а laboratory assistant. Не lived in а hostel for the University students and had meals with them too. The hostess of the cafe was а greedy woman who tried to economize on the students’ food. The students felt it but couldn’t prove that when she gave а beefsteak for dinner, she picked up bits and ends from the plates, cooked them again and served as fried meat for breakfast. Robert Wood decided to prove the students’ guesses. Не added lithium chlorine to his beefsteak and left it on plate. The next morning he put the bits of his fried meat into his pocket and examined them with his spectroscope. Не saw what he had expected to see.

What did he see?
