My native town

My native town.

Gorky is my native town. It is situated in the eastern part of Belarus in Mogilev region. I have been living in Gorky since my childhood. I know my native town very well and I′m very proud of its past and present and I am sure of its wonderful future.

Gorky is one of the oldest towns in Belarus. It was first mentioned in the 16^th century. During the North war in 1708 Russian tsar Peter the Great was in Gorky. The hill where Russian troops were located is called now Peter′s hill. Picturesque landscape inspired Russian poet G. Derzhavin. After visiting Gorky he created such famous poems as “Gorky” and “The Miller”. His poems described the beauty of this part of the country.

In 1840 Gory-Goretskaya agricultural school was opened here (later” the agricultural institute”). It was the first Russian agricultural establishment. Under the supervision of an Italian technician Kampiony 35 houses were built: buildings for training, shops.

The students took part in the political demonstrations, strikes and propagandized the revolutionary ideas among peasants. The off-springs will never forget the names of P. Brutser and F. Erofeev, killed by the police in January, 1905. One of the streets is named after them.

During the Great Patriotic War Gorky district suffered greatly. With the help of people of other fraternal republics Gorky was restored.

The excursion to Lenino is also very famous. Lenino is 17 km away from Gorky. It is a very dear place for Byelorussian and Polish people. In October, 12, 1943 joint troops of Soviet Army and the soldiers of the 1^st Polish Division after Tadeush Kostushko struggled heroically against fascists. It was a great battle. Many soldiers were killed in it. There is a museum in Lenino in the form of a helput.

Today Gorky is a town of education. There are 4 secondary schools, a gymnasium and The Byelorussian agricultural Academy. Gorky is a town of culture. We have two palaces of culture, the cinema, some libraries, cafes, a restaurant, two stadiums, a swimming pool, Historic Museum, art gallery and others.

There are some industrial plants in Gorky that produce milk, butter, cheese, ice-cream, bread, some drinks. Our town is a construction site and it is growing day by day.

The nature is very beautiful and picturesque. There are many fine forests around my native town. Gorky is charming in every season of the year, but I like when it is …, because ….

I like to walk along the green streets in early spring and summer and my favourite place in Gorky is …, because ….

In future I would like to (live in; leave) Gorky because ….
