Lesson Plan: "My Body" (Grade 8, ESL) – 5E Model

Duration: 45–50 minutes
Topic: Human body vocabulary, functions of body parts, health context
Objective:

  • Students will describe parts of the body and their functions.

  • Students will use body-related vocabulary in context.

  • Students will develop speaking, reading, and writing skills.

1. Engage (5–7 minutes)

Goal: Activate interest and prior knowledge.
Activity:

  • Show an image of a human body (e.g., anatomical poster or sketch).

  • Ask students:

    • “How many body parts can you name in English?”

    • “Which body part helps you think? Breathe? Eat?”

  • Warm-up quiz: "Guess the body part!" (Teacher describes, students guess)

2. Explore (10 minutes)

Goal: Students discover or review vocabulary and concepts.
Activity:

  • In pairs, students receive a worksheet or digital slide with body part images and names (some blank).

  • Task: Match names to images and write one function next to each (e.g., Eyes – to see).

  • Encourage use of dictionaries or glossaries.

3. Explain (10 minutes)

Goal: Clarify vocabulary, functions, and correct usage.
Activity:

  • Go over the answers as a class.

  • Teacher presents target vocabulary (brain, lungs, heart, muscles, etc.) and sample sentences:

    • “The brain controls our thoughts.”

    • “The heart pumps blood through the body.”

  • Discuss word families: breathe/breath, think/thought, move/movement.

4. Elaborate (10–12 minutes)

Goal: Apply knowledge in meaningful context.
Activity Options:
a) Group work: Each group chooses a body system (respiratory, circulatory, muscular) and prepares a 3-sentence explanation in English.
b) Speaking task: Students work in pairs and describe symptoms for a role-play: one is a doctor, one is a patient.
Example:

  • “I have a headache and a sore throat.”

  • “You should rest and drink warm tea.”

5. Evaluate (5–8 minutes)

Goal: Assess understanding.
Activity:

  • Quick quiz or exit slips (3 short questions):

    • “What does the heart do?”

    • “Name 3 internal organs.”

    • “What do you do if you have a stomachache?”

  • Optional: Self-assessment checklist:

    • “I can name 10 body parts.”

    • “I can describe their functions.”

    • “I can ask for help if I’m sick.”
