III O.K. Let’s begin working.
I hope you remember proverbs about the weather. There’re some of them on the blackboard. Please fill in the necessary words, read and translate them.
1) When it … , it pours.
2) Save it for … .
3) Every … has a silver lining.
4) Everything is good in its … .
5) … never strikes the same place twice.
6) Make hay while … .
( season, lightning, the sun shines, rains, cloud, a rainy day)
And as a motto of our lesson I’ve chosen one more proverb. Read it please. Can you translate it into Russian?
“After rain comes fair weather”.
После дождя наступает хорошая погода.
После дождя ясная погода.
Всё проходит.
После несчастья приходит счастье.
Thank you very much.
IV At the previous lessons we created an excellent web- map. Make as many true word combinations as possible. Name 3 of them. Don’t repeat words.
V Good for you. I see you know the words.
I wish I knew the weather in America. Oh, I have an idea. Let’s listen to the texts about it. You will hear 2 announcements about flights. Then you will write the missing information on these sheets of paper. It can be a word or a number. First read the words on the blackboard.
To approach- to come nearer;
On be half of- for the name of;
Delay- put off until later;
Patience- ability to wait calmly.
Now please listen to the text..
VI So What’s the weather in Boston like? The weather in Boston is sunny. And in New York?
It is stormy. What about our town?
A nice day, isn’t it?
Absolutely nice.
VII I’m sorry for Roma, but the weather is an important part of our lives. It can change what we do and how we fill. I have some news.
Alyosha Yefimov has studied the influences of the weather on the people’s health. You can ask him questions about it .
How much impact does the weather have on people’s health and moods?
We know that weather has an effect on certain diseases such as arthritis and heart disorders. Weather is also associated with emotional problems and disturbed behaviour. It is not by itself a direct cause of mental illness, but it can create an added stress on people on top of marital and other problems.
What kind of weather have the greatest effect?
Temperature is the most important factor. Heat is clearly linked to mood disturbances.We find that heat is an important factor in the increase of emotional problems.
How much effect does humidity have on individuals?
Rainy weather leads to gloominess and depression.
And sunshine?
It’s not too surprising that sunshine, especially in the North, is associated with positive mood states, especially during winter months. What’s more interesting is the finding that people are more likely to help others and behave in a prosocial way.
How long does it take the body to adapt to weather changes?
When people move from a cool climate to a warm, subtropical one, they’re very uncomfortable at first. But adaptation occurs rather quickly – within about two weeks.
Are some people particularly sensitive to weather?
Certainly, elderly people tend to be more sensitive to weather that younger people because their cardiovascular system is less efficient. Body weight also makes a difference. Heavier people have more difficulty coping with hot weather, while thin people have a harder time in extreme cold.
In your opinion, what is the ideal weather for physical and emotional well-being?
Temperature in the low 70s, with some variation. People enjoy a slight change in temperature – but not a drastic change where the temperature rises or falls more than 15 degrees. A little bit of breeze, but not a strong wind, is also ideal. Obviously, sunshine make people feel good – as long as there is not too much of it.
VIII Well I like your questions and your answers. How much have you learned from the text?
Speak about how the weather can influence on people.
I see you’re a little tired. Would you like to have a rest. Enjoy the famous song of Boney M “Calendar Song “. If you wish, you may sing with the singers. Our quests may sing with us.
IX That’s better isn’t it? So our winter lasts 3 months: December, January and February. And in Britain it begins in November and ends in February Are there any other differences between the climates of Russia and the climates in America and England. ( children are speaking about the climate in Russia).
English people say:” Other countries have climates. We have weather”. Why do they say so? (children are speaking about the climate in England)
We have already known that the weather in Boston is sunny and New York has the stormy weather. Is there often such weather there? (children are speaking about the climate New York)
Thanks a lot. You really take the cake. What’s the decision?
- Our winters are colder than in England, but our summers are hotter, too.
- The climate in New York is a modified continental, so it differs from the climate of Moscow.
Can we agree with that? Yes!
XI Do you know that there are a lot of superstitions connecting with the weather. Now we’re going to read the text about it. First you’ll read it for yourselves. Match the context of every paragraph with the listed headings and decide which heading suits best to each paragraph. One heading is extra. Mind new words.
Superstition- суеверие;
To pray- молиться;
Stinging nettle- жгучая крапива;
Swallow- ласточка;
Scientific techniques- научное оборудование;
Reasonablу - разумно, умеренно, достаточно;
Reliable- надёжный, заслуживающий доверия;
Sign- примета.
Begin working. I’ll give you 3 minutes.
1b, 2f, 3a, 4e, 5d.
Now read each paragraph and give it a heading.
Read the text once again. How many superstitions can you find. One minute for you.
XII You’re ready, aren’t you? Look at the pictures on the blackboard and say they are connected with myths and superstitions.
Ships- fishing boats are often still painted with an eye to watch for the sea gods and to warn of likely storms.
Thunderstorm- clouds were thought to be transport of the gods and the gods showed their anger in thunder and lightning.
Sun- the sun or winds were thought to be gods and were given names.
Stinging nettle- people try to find stinging nettle in an electric storm because of the ancient belief that a nettle gives you protection from lightning.
Cow- cows lie down before it rains.
Swallows- when swallows fly high the weather is going to be good.
Apple-tree- in Britain people say that when there are lots of berries on trees and bushes in autumn, the winter is going to be hard.
The 15th of July- if it rains on the 15th of July, then it will rain each day for the next 40 days.
XIII Great! I knew you could do it. We have some minutes left. Would you like to learn about Russian winter signs?
XIV At the end of our lesson I want you to speak about emotions you feel after the English lesson. ( children are speaking about their emotions).
That’s all for today. The lesson is over. Thank you for your working. Good bye.
