Today we are going to sum up our knowledge about Australia, its states and capitals, flora and fauna. You learnt much about this continent and I think that you will be able to take part in all the competitions and you’ll surely win. There will be 6 competitions. For each right answer you’ll get a red cap, if you make some mistakes, you’ll get a blue cap. And if you don’t answer at all or give the wrong answer, you’ll get a green cap.

II. Competition 1. “Greeting”

T.: At home you prepared the names of your teams and your mottos. Greet each other.

1st team: Our team is “dingo”. We are quickly as kangaroos and sly as dingoes.

2nd team: Our team is “cockatoo”. We all can do, we can everybody win, but it isn’t our goal, we’d like to become good friends.

III. Competition 2. “Do You Remember?”

T.: I’ve got 10 questions, for each team by 5 ones. If one team doesn’t answer a question, I’ll give a chance to another team to answer the same question.

1st team.

1) Where is Australia situated? 2) How many deserts are there? Name them. 3) What is the most important river? 4) When does winter begin in Australia? 5) What do Australian animals lay?

2nd team.

1) What oceans wash Australia? 2) How many states and territories are there in Australia? Name them. 3) What is the capital of Australia? 4) When does summer come in Australia? 5) What animal resembles a teddy-bear?

T.: Now the results of the first two competitions. Both the teams were very good. Team 1 gets … points, team 2 gets … points.

IV. Competition 3. “Wildlife of Australia”

T.: You know a lot of birds and animals of Australia. Each team has to write down as many Australian species of wildlife as it can. Then you will read your lists. Whose team writes the most words of all and doesn’t make any mistakes, that team will win. I’ll give you 1 minute.

V. Competition 4. “States and Territories of Australia”

T.: Let’s pass on the next competition. It consists of two stages. 1)Each team has cards with the names of Australian states and their capitals. I’ll read the statements about the states of Australia and you’ll have to put up the cards with the name of the proper state. Who is the quickest?

1) This state is famous for leading industry. (New South Wales). 2) Crocodiles still leave here. (Northern Territory). 3) Cattle farms and sheep stations are usually here. (Western Australia). 4) Wheat and fruit are grown along the lower part of the Murray River. (Southern Australia). 5) The apple isle. (Tasmania). 6) It’s a popular place for holidaymakers. (Queensland). 7) Sheep and wheat are the main products here. (Victoria). 8) Only Canberra is situated here.(Australian Capital Territory).

T.: 2) And now match the capitals with their states and territories. Put the cards with their names on your desks and I’ll see the right answers. I’ll give you one more minute.

Sydney-New South Wales, Melbourne-Victoria, Brisbane-Queensland, Perth-Western Australia, Adelaide-Southern Australia, Hobart-Tasmania, Darwin- Northern Territory, Canberra-Australian Capital Territory. (the teacher calls the results of this competition).

VI. Competition 5. “Captains’ ”

T.: I’m going to invite your captains. I’ll give you cards of two colours-red and green. I’ll read statements. If they are true, you will show me a red card, if not-a green card. If the answer of one captain is wrong, I’ll give a chance to another one to answer the same question.

1) Australia is a country and independence state. (+) 2) Australia is a continent. (+) 3) The official language is Spanish. (-) 4) The Atlantic Ocean washes Australia. (-) 5) The duckbill lays eggs. (+) 6) Climate is generally mild and humid in the east. (+) 7) Buffaloes were brought from France. (-) 8) The rabbits destroy much grass. (+)

VII. Competition 6. “I Know It Much Better”

T.: Explain to everybody what the following statements mean. For the 1st team-“the unknown southern land”, for the 2nd team-“the upside down world”.

1st team: This statement means that this continent was discovered very late. Europeans had never seen it before. They wondered what it was like and whether it was inhabited. That’s why they called it terra australis incognita, or “the unknown southern land”-Australia.

2nd team: Sometimes Australia is called “the upside down world”. Because it lies in the Southern Hemisphere, where winter comes in July and summer begins in December. Australia is the hottest place in the Southern Hemisphere. In July usual temperatures are from 12 to 20 C. in January the temperatures are from 20 to 30 C above zero or higher.

T.: I’m happy to announce the results of our competition. Please, count your caps. Who has the most “excellent” caps, he wins. You have finished with the score … (in favour of team…; or in a draw) I’m very glad with your answers. Now you can say that you know much about Australia, its states, capitals, flora and fauna. Good-bye and good luck! The lesson is over.
