Today, instead of the former deep sea, there is a new sand and saline Aralkum desert with the total area of 38 000 square km.

Today, about 200,000 tons of salt and sand are carried by the wind from the Aral Sea region every day, and dumped within a 300 km radius.

The population has highly dropped in the past 20  years.

The Aral Sea region is also heavily polluted. The air pollution and water pollution cause serious health problems. Diseases like anemia, cancer ( throat cancer)  and tuberculosis, and the presence of allergies, are on the rise.

There are many ecological problems which threaten our natural environment. Acid rain, global warming and air and water pollution are among the most serious ones. Every year, world industry pollutes the earth’s atmosphere with about 100 million tons of dust and other harmful substances. As the result, some rare species of animals, birds, fish and plants disappear forever, and a number of rivers and lakes dry up.

We human beings take from nature as much as we can. We cut down forests and build farms, houses, road on the land. While doing that, we pollute the environment. Cars and factories, plants and power stations also pollute the air and make it dangerous to breath.

People have always polluted their surroundings. But until now pollution was not such a serious problem. In past most people lived in uncrowded rural areas and didn’t have pollution using machines. But with the development of crowded industrial cities the problem of pollution has become more important. Since the 1950’s people have become alarmed with the danger of environmental pollution.

Air, water, and land are necessary for existence of all living things. But polluted air can cause illness, and even death. Polluted water kills fish and other marine life. On polluted soil, food products can’t be grown. In addition environmental pollution spoils the natural beauty of our planet.

Pollution is a very complicated and a serious problem. Automobiles are polluting the air but they provide fast transportation for the people. Plants and factories pollute the air and the water but they provide jobs for people and produce necessary goods. Fertilizers and pesticides are important for growing crops but they pollute soil.

Thus, people would have to stop using many useful things if they wanted to end pollution immediately. Most people don’t agree to do that. But pollution can be reduced gradually. Scientists and engineers can find the ways to reduce pollution from automobiles and factories. Government can pass the laws that would make enterprises take measures for reducing of pollution. Individuals and groups of people can work together to persuade enterprises to stop polluting environment.
